These notes are best for UPSC, SSC, NDA, Railway, Bank, TET, Police and other Exams.

Rule 1: Singular and Plural Subjects

Simple Rule:

A singular subject takes a singular verb, while a plural subject takes a plural verb.
Singular: "The cat runs."
Plural: "The cats run."

Compound Subjects:

When two or more subjects are joined by 'and', they typically take a plural verb.
"John and Mary are going to the market."
However, if the compound subjects refer to a single entity or a unit, a singular verb is used.
"Peanut butter and jelly is my favorite snack."

Rule 2: Indefinite Pronouns

Indefinite Pronouns:

Pronouns like 'everyone', 'someone', 'nobody', 'each', and 'every' are singular and take singular verbs.
"Everyone is welcome."
"Each of the players has a role."

Indefinite pronouns like 'several', 'many', 'few', and 'both' are plural and take plural verbs.
"Many were called."

Rule 3: Collective Nouns

Collective Nouns:

Nouns that refer to a group (e.g., 'team', 'family', 'committee') can take either singular or plural verbs depending on whether the group is acting as a single unit or as individuals.

As a single unit: "The team wins every game."
As individuals: "The team are arguing among themselves."

Rule 4: Subject Separated from the Verb

Intervening Phrases:

Sometimes phrases come between the subject and the verb. These do not affect the verb number.

"The bouquet of flowers smells lovely."
"The box of books was heavy."

Rule 5: Agreement with Compound Subjects Joined by 'Or' or 'Nor'

Compound Subjects with 'Or' or 'Nor':

When subjects are connected by 'or' or 'nor', the verb should agree with the subject closest to it.

"Neither the teacher nor the students are ready."
"Either the students or the teacher is coming."

Rule 6: Subjects Following the Verb

Inverted Sentences: In questions or sentences beginning with 'here' or 'there', the subject follows the verb. Ensure the verb agrees with the subject.

"Where are the keys?"
"There is a problem."

Rule 7: Singular Subjects with Plural Forms

Nouns with Plural Forms but Singular Meaning:

Words like 'news', 'mathematics', 'measles', and 'economics' are singular despite their plural form.
"The news is on at six."
"Mathematics is hard for some students."

Rule 8: Titles and Names

Titles and Names:

Titles of books, movies, and other works, as well as names of organizations, are treated as singular even if they appear plural.

"The Chronicles of Narnia is a popular series."
"The United Nations is meeting today."

Rule 9: Fractions and Percentages

Fractions and Percentages:

The verb agrees with the noun following 'of'.

"Fifty percent of the cake is gone."
"Fifty percent of the students are present."

Rule 10: Plural Form Subjects with Singular Meaning

Subjects Plural in Form but Singular in Meaning:

Some nouns look plural but are singular in meaning and take a singular verb.

"The news is alarming."
"Physics is fascinating."
